Daddy’s Girl Will Kick Your Butt

Posted by DJ Nelson on August 21st, 2007

I’m impressed. My hat goes off to Laila Ali. I just finished watching a documentary on her (Daddy’s Girl) and I’m left speechless.

Before I watched this I thought she was arrogant beyond arrogant.lailaali.jpg

That was until she addressed it.

Ali said something like why can’t she just be confident? If she was a man people wouldn’t call her arrogant but because she’s a strong woman people have to label her negatively. That really hit me hard (no pun intended) because I’ve often feel the same way about certain traits I display.

I began to think about it and realized that yes, she might come off as arrogant but when you are in that line of business you have to be. You have to be confident and trust in yourself without a doubt. If not then you’ll be in a bad spot once you get in that ring. If you have any doubts about your strength, talent, and abilities then you automatically are setting yourself up to be at a disadvantage. So she’s not arrogant- she’s smart.

It wasn’t just her confidence that inspired me, but some of her reflections on life, culture, the state of women… just amazing.

I give this documentary two thumbs up; however I wish it was being shown on another venue in addition to TV One; no disrespect to the station but a lot of people don’t have that channel and I think it should be shown to a wider audience.

When I used to box, I got alot of crap just because I was a female and not a male. WTF? I did better then most guys in the ring. They showed up to look all tough but please believe-they were not in shape, had no endurance, could BARELY last one round and quit less then two weeks. I lasted four years! And people thought I was stuck up or cocky-I just had a lot of confidence in myself. I wasn’t trying to look good for any guy but for myself. I also played ice hockey-another male dominated sport, but then again I like to go against the norm…
