Lauren Upton- Give the Girl a Break

Posted by DJ Nelson on August 28th, 2007

Let’s cut this poor girl some slack.

To fill you in on the story, Miss Teen South Carolina Lauren Upton was asked “Recent polls have shown a fifth of Americans can’t locate the United States on a world map. Why do you think this is?”

She responded with something that didn’t quite make sense. [Video]
Now she’s getting blasted all across the news and blogosphere.

Ok, I admit that what she said sounds a little off, but sometimes when you are put on the spot you have to say the first thing that comes to mind without thinking about how it sounds. Ask President Bush.

Here’s what someone else said about the situation:

“While it’s easy to laugh at Upton, I’d submit that she’s practicing the same craft that’s used by US business leaders and politicians every day: that of saying a whole bunch of meaningless stuff to try to hide the fact that a statement is wrong, incoherent, or nonexistent. And that the only reason that we’re laughing at Upton is because she doesn’t have the years of practice that her (mostly male) elders use to hide their ignorance and dishonesty.” [Source]

You have 3 seconds, how would you answer the question?

Well I’m from the Caribbean and not America but If they replaced the place then I’ll probably mention education on Geography lol str8 of the top of my head! You can tell she was taught how to answer questions not relating to something as dumb as that 1. I won’t laugh at her at all, but she should’ve known making a mistake up there woudv’e cause this.

She panicked. She’d been under a lot of stress for an extended period of time, and she simply cracked. Just like WE ALL DO from time to time, just not on national TV.
I’m impressed with her grace after the flub; she’s still a lovely young lady and I’m sure she will do well in college.
It was a flub, not a sin. She has nothing to be ashamed of, unlike all the carrion-sniffers in the blogosphere who love to descend on someone who displays a little human nature.

My fourteen year old son has made a very big deal about making fun of this woman. I watched the video with pained empathy. I give public presentations and teach difficult audiences many times every week. I have the same mind-blank experiences. I told him to pray it never happens to you.

I laughed as well because the whole contest is a farce. People do not watch it for intelligent women (the contest has never had any), but women with different kinds of frontal lobes. She’s an idiot, but it’s not really her fault. Genetics gave her large…..uh…lobes in the wrong region.

I’ve spoken in front of large groups and I have gotten extremely nervous but I still maintained an intelligent and coherent speech.

She’s trained for this before and been in front of large crowds (she did, after all, win the Miss Teen South Carolina contest before) so there is no excuse for this. People need to realize these contests have women who are like a Van Gogh work: They’re pretty but you can’t have a conversation with one.

That’s just what this US American thinks.

I think she was cute
