High School Girls Asked If They Are Menstruating

Posted by DJ Nelson on September 28th, 2007

It always frustrates me when people violate privacy rights under the guise of “maintaining safety.”

“A student at Tri-Valley High School was called out of class by a security guard during a school sweep last week to make sure no kids had backpacks or other banned bags. Samantha Martin, 14, had a small purse with her that day. That’s why the security guard, ex-Monticello cop Mike Bunce, asked her The Question. She says he told her she couldn’t have a purse unless she had her period. Then he asked, “Do you have your period?”Samantha was mortified. She says she thought, “Oh, my God. Get away from me.” But instead of answering, she just walked back into class. At home, she cried, and told her mother what happened. It appears that at least a few other girls were also asked the same question.” [Source]

At least I’m not the only one who thinks this is absolutely ridiculous. Some students are not taking this lightly.

“Girls have worn tampons on their clothes in protest, and purses made out of tampon boxes. Some boys wore maxi-pads stuck to their shirts in support.”

What’s next? Breast checks to make sure they aren’t hiding any dangerous items down their shirts? Wait…let me refrain from giving them any more bright ideas.

Good lord. As if being a teenaged girl isn’t hard enough.

It is hard. Boy I’m glad I’m not a teen anymore.

I stumbled upon this & what’s ironic is that right before this, I stumbled upon a picture portraying our current status as fascist. One reviewer was appalled anyone could possibly consider our great country as fascist, but in all honesty, fear is one of the most often used tools to take down a democracy on the road to fascism. One commenter at the source played right into this fear factor by angrily stating that kids lie, etc., etc. While I agree that viewpoint is valid, I wouldn’t point it out as a fear marker if the commenter had been less strident about it. I am scared for our country, but I do not fear my life will end from a terrorist act, an office rampage, etc. nor do I fear the young ones in my life are going to die from a Columbine-esc type situation. Yes, the possibility is there & yes, people are crazier than ever before, but I cannot live my life in fear. I would rather live my life in freedom..protected freedoms…not freedoms taken away “for” my protection.

Obviously sanitary napkins and tampons are not the best protection against nosy security guards.

One strategy would be to use reusable cotton sanitary napkins. Girls can stop wasting their money on throwaways that pollute the environment and if searched by a guard, he would be in for quite a surprise when caught pawing through a bag containing napkins destined for the laundry.

Just a thought. I’d love to hear others.

There is obviously some sort of security reason as to why the security guard needed to check that no one had backpacks and the like. And how else could he have found out why she had that small purse. I think he was in the right to inquire but I also think he should have either let the girl explain it or mention how he is obligated to ask before he did so.

“What’s next? Breast checks to make sure they aren’t hiding any dangerous items down their shirts?” No, because girls never carry anything dangerous, its unladylike

Yes, lets make him suffer for doing his job ¬_¬

We never carry anything dangerous? Are you kidding? I’ve hidden razor blades in my clothes before (not my bra, but still…). Yes, those were for hurting myself, not others, but they could easily be used for hurting others too.

That’s horrible… that girl shouldn’t have been embarrassed like that. =/

Every girl has their period, its not something girls should be ashamed about! WHO CARES? let the whole world know you are just like every other female on Earth, and able to bear children. I can’t wait for the day when it is okay for girls to have their period, without feeling gross and unnatural. Just because males don’t menstruate, doesn’t mean its wrong! It is completely natural, and who cares if someone asks about it? They needed to know for issues regarding their policies on bags!

MyAvatars 0.2

So, knowing that public school essentially is merely a prep for prison, why are you not homeschooling? Seriously.

MyAvatars 0.2

Wow. Really? Get over it. It’s not a big deal. You wouldn’t freak out if your doctor asked if you were on your period, you know why? Because it’s standard procedure, as I’m sure it was for the security guard. Jeez, don’t blow things out of proportion.

MyAvatars 0.2

To Jessica. A rent-a-cop is not a doctor. To further, making sure children don’t carry backpacks of all things should not be “standard procedure”. I can’t see why anyone would send their child to such a distrustful institution.

MyAvatars 0.2

Woah craziness!!! Seriously and thought must girls used that as an excuse not to do things, and now they are being persecuted almost. Why would anyone ever want to know that anyway?

MyAvatars 0.2

I like the methods of protest being used, as well as the fact that boys are taking a stand on the side of the girls in this school. Just because everyone has their period doesn’t mean it doesn’t have to be a private matter. I don’t want everyone to know my menstrual cycle, even if it is natural to have it. It’s one of those TMI things. Besides, in a culture where being female is supposedly inherently unnatural (the male gaze, anyone?), the last thing a teenage girl wants to do is talk about her monthly visit.

At least The Supreme Court still has some sense. Take a look at this and see your prophecy of checking a girls shirt come true.http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2009/06/25/national/main5112597.shtml

in high school, i can see why a girl would be embarrassed and what not. i think it’s harder for older girls to remember that… but now, I don’t give a flying fuck what people think, and if they ask, i tell.

‘There is obviously some sort of security reason as to why the security guard needed to check that no one had backpacks and the like.’

If there was some kind of security reason, the security guard would have presumably asked a better question than ‘do you have your period?’. It’s not like women only carry sanitary protection with them when they are menstruating right that second. Plenty of women carry it with them all the time. With such poor detective work, I’m assuming that he was just being pervy.
