Yes, That’s My Name…And?

November 10th, 2007 By: DJ Nelson · 4 Comments

My husband and I have different last names.

This is not unusual.

Yet I keep encountering people who just can’t comprehend this.

I was annoyed when I was told, “well you must not love him enough because you aren’t taking his name.” This puzzled me because I thought, “Why can’t I say the same thing? Maybe he doesn’t love me enough to take my name. Besides, what in the world does this have to do with love?”

This really isn’t about women’s empowerment or feminism, it’s about my right as an adult to have whatever name I choose. My name has been my name all of my life and if I want to keep it that way, I don’t see what the big deal is.

It’s really not an issue until someone else makes it one. Besides, we’ve already agreed that we will both be changing our last names. I think it’s nice for families to have the same last name. We just haven’t gotten around to it yet.

So Mr. Bank Teller who asked me “If that’s your husband, then why do you have different names?” I say, mind your own business and deposit my check. Thanks.

By the way, the fact that we don’t share a last name had nothing to do with depositing the check, as only my name was on it. He was just being nosey.

Sometimes I wish I would have kept my last name.

I can’t believe that people still make a big deal about the name change. I did it in increments. I hyphenated, then I used my maiden name as my middle name and after 6 years I finally just use my husband’s name. Never legally changed it though. But that’s because I’m lazy. :-)

How funny! Like Heather, I can’t believe people are making a big deal out of this. Still, I think people act weird about names. My husband is Ed and I can’t tell you how many times people have asked me how to spell his name. It’s E….D…..Ed.

Like I said, people are weird about names.
