5 Posts That Made Me Say Hmmmm

Posted by DJ Nelson on January 30th, 2008

5. Shake Your Naked Behind For Jesus

I don’t watch BET (Black Entertainment Television). It’s such a derogatory channel, and I don’t find degrading women to be all that entertaining. That being said, What About Our Daughters is a blog I enjoy reading, and it frequently comments on the negative impact that BET has on our society. Has the Black Clergy lost it’s Righteous Minds made me say Hmmmm because where do you draw the line between trying to spread your word to a larger audience, and being a hypocrite?

4. Kids Need a Little Roughing Up

The “socialization” of schools is frustrating sometimes. People try to minizmize it and make it acceptable by saying “that’s just how it works, how will the kids cope in the real world” blah, blah, blah. As if the real world accepts bullying without consequences. However, I had no idea that the negative behavior and bullying started in preschool. Preschool?!? What the heck are you teaching your kids? That’s why Girl Fight made me say Hmmmm.

3. You Mean There are Poor People in the US?

As much as people try not to talk about it, class certainly is an issue in this country. The Class Privilege Meme made me say Hmmm because I could say yes to almost all of the statements, and it made me realize how blessed I am. Sometimes when you have so much it’s easy to think that everyone lives that way.

2. Can You Repeat That Please?

Just a few thoughts made me say Hmmm because I’m still trying to wrap my head around how one could be both a feminist and misogynist.

1. It’s Not Rape, It’s Surprise Sex

Men Behaving Badly Wow. Do I even need to say why this made me say Hmmm?

Thank you Diva for including my article as your No. 1 post. I’ve received some hate mail for writing about this one so it’s great to receive some support.

wow. that misogynist/antiracist one was very interesting.

and as far as class privelage, I obviously grew up super poor, but man are my kids looking too privelaged when I applied it to them.

Actually DJ—it’s quite easily for feminists to engage in misogyny, because we all live in the same society with the same culture and women internalize the same bigotry that men do. Calling one’s self a feminist doesn’t change that fact, at least not by itself.

I mean—look at BET. It’s supposed to be a channel for African Americans, yet they regurgitate as many antiblack stereotypes as FOX News or Rush Limbaugh or anywhere else. Why is that? Because Black folk get the same racist messages about Black people as white folks do. The same is true with misogyny and other forms of bigotry as well.

Great post!

I can really appreciate #3. I was able to answer “yes” to a majority of the questions. However, because I’m more inclined to focus on the negative aspects of my life, I forget the good. Sometimes we need a reality check.
