Has Women’s Empowerment Ruined Society?

Posted by DJ Nelson on May 28th, 2008

I’ve been doing a lot of religious reading lately, but I always have to put it on hold when I come across materials that imply that women who want to be treated with respect are the reason that the world has gone crazy.

They say that feminism has ruined society because it takes women out of their natural roles, and thus there has been a domino effect that has caused the world to be doomed. If you really want to follow God’s will, you must dismiss all these sinful ideas.

Oh really?

Here’s how I see it.

This is what the world tells me on a daily basis.

Your body parts are nasty except for when I want to feel you up in public, but don’t worry, I know you want it and if you don’t, you have no sense of humor.

Don’t try to get ahead in the world, because after all you are just a woman. But then again, if you don’t at least try, you are lazy.

Hey, I’m not making this up. This is just the way God intended it to be. He also made you have a monthly cycle ,but I don’t know why because that is so disgusting. So be sure to be embarassed when it’s your time of the month.

Look, I’m not trying to say you aren’t good enough as you are, but let’s face it, you aren’t good enough until you have plastic surgery; and be sure you are within a certain weight at all times. If you are too skinny, you look sick, but don’t get too curvy (unless it’s your breasts) because if you do, you are lazy and unattractive.

When you get married, you become your husbands property so you must change your last name. Oh yes, we have to be politcally correct. You don’t change your last name because of that, you change your last name to show that you love your husband and that you are a family. These fricking feminists are brainwashing you!

Follow all these rules and believe everything I say or I will make you an outcast. I will call you all kinds of names, and convince people that you are trying to destroy the family-orientied society. Because that’s your ultimate goal, you hate family and you hate God. Either that, or you are a lesbian.

So you mean that women and men who are trying to combat all of those ideas are the reason those ideas are in place? If I just sat down, shut my mouth, and made dinner then everything would be ok?

That’s a tough sell…

Perhaps it’s the brand of Christianity and religious material your reading. Certain brands of Christianity have been primarily responsible for the repression and oppression of women.

Methodists are a safe bet for feminists. They allow women in leadership roles. They don’t expect you to give up your identity for your husband. They encourage women to preach and teach and have autonomy. That’s rare in religious circles.

Spiritually you might consider A New Earth which has a take on women that’s interesting. Eckhart Tolle says that men became so involved with their egos and their desire to hoard all the worldly power that they got cut off spiritually.

He feels that today women are closer to enlightenment and closer to God because they have not had any outward power to identify themselves with.

If you are Christian then that means you agree to the terms. Men are first, women are second and that’s just how it is.

That’s absurd S. Dunn.

Christians have to be the most disagreeable people on earth. That’s why there are so many Christian denominations.

“The Terms” aren’t the same in all churches.

I won’t agree to any terms in which I’m second. And I have to say it’s a pretty negative way to get women to convert. No thanks.

You have to understand that people are going to be opinionated no matter what the topic is. It doesn’t matter if it’s parenting, or politics, or religion; people will always insert their opinions
and interpretations.

You will have some people that believe you and go along with that, and then you’ll have others that form their own opinion. That’s
where the differences in Christianity come.

It’s no different than any other topic so I don’t think it’s fair to label Chrisitans as disagreeable. Everyone isn’t the same.

Just as I always say it’s not fair to label all women who want respect as radical, foolish, women who are destroying society.

I am Christian, and I always will be. But that doesn’t mean I agree with everything that “Christians” say and do. There’s a lot of groups that call themselves Christians and I wish they wouldn’t because they are doing nothing but spreading lies.

But as for me, I will always use my brain and read the Bible for what it is, and not twist it into something that puts men as Kings and lords over women. I don’t believe that’s what God intended, but that’s what humanity turned it into. To all who do believe that was God’s intention, I have to ask, how did Jesus treat women?

Disagreeable as in “we can not agree on how it works.”

Jesus was a feminist.

my forte. you know me enough to know two things,

1. I am saved.
2. I’m a feminist.

you know, look at how Jesus associated with women. Jesus redeemed women from societies trap constantly.

And for better Christian reading, try TD Jakes, and Juanita Bynum (circa 2007) and Joyce Meyer, and Lisa Bevere, and a whole lot of other people. God has used a lot of people in the Charasmatic/Pentecostal/Evangelical/Non Denominational vein to speak to women and their societal confines.

I have tons to say on this topic, but it would take forever for me to divulge.

@Tracee Ah, I gotcha.

@LD Feel free to share your opinions whenever you feel so inclined. As for TD Jakes, sorry but I can’t take religious advice from a man who doesn’t believe in the Trinity.
