Too Young For Makeup?

Posted by DJ Nelson on September 10th, 2008

Since when do 13 year olds wear makeup?

On an episode of Dr. Phil a father wanted advice on raising his teenage daughter. Of course the issue of makeup came up, and a guest Dr. on the show said that 13 was an ok age if she was doing it because she wanted to and not because she wanted to get attention from boys. Dr. Phil agreed. He even asked, “do you think she wants to wear makeup for the right reasons?”

My question is, unless it’s Halloween or a school play, what reasons would a 13 year old have to wear makeup except for if she wanted to attract boys (or fit in with the other girls)?

Neither of those seem like the “right reason” but someone please enlighten me if I am off base.

When I was growing up the rule was that at 16 makeup ok, never before.

I think young girls wearing makeup sends the wrong message. Not necessarily to other people, but to the girls themselves who think that makeup is one of the top four necessities; right after low carb food, Evian water, and revealing clothes.

How do you feel about the makeup issue?

Well I don’t really know. Let me think about it.

The rule in our house was no makeup until 15. That was the age my mother was allowed to wear makeup, and it passed down to us. In actuality, she loosen the grip a little early and I was allowed to wear lipstick at 13 - but that was it. The eyeliner, eyeshadow and other stuff had to wait. Although I could wear light (almost non-existent) shades of lipstick, I wasn’t allowed to wear red lipstick until I was 17. Don’t know why, but it was the rule.

I think that little girls tend to think of makeup sort of as a way to act more like their mothers, or to express some creativity on their faces.

When I was growing up, my mom was fine with me wearing makeup from 13 up. I never really cared about boys–I just liked to experiment with the colors.

I think that more important than the makeup itself is how much and what sorts. A couple subtle, pretty eyeshadows combined with some kind of fruity lipgloss can help a girl feel more like an individual, but if a girl has blue eyeshadow up to her eyebrows, deep red lipstick, and false eyelashes–something’s gone wrong and boundries need to be set.

Do 13 year olds these days still want to be like mommy or are they more influenced by peers?

It’s unfair to lump all 13 year olds into one category. It’s really up to the parents of the teen to decide wether or not their kiddo is trying to model their own behavior, or is looking to be more like their peers.

ok im thirteen and i wear make up its not to attract boys its to make me feel like im and indivisual to make feel like i have my own special look and i dont a whole bunch of gunk on my face i were eyeshadow eyeliner and lipgloss and sometimes blushi dont see what the problem

I wear light makeup to bring out my natural beauty at age 13. i don’t gunk it all on and i never even thought about guys or fitting in. I do it for my self-confidence and i need to cover up a teeny zit sometimes. i only think you should let a girl wear makeup if she has red spots, brown spots, zits, or to even out her complexion and she should know how to properly put it on. i don’t wear lipstick and i use a LIGHT brown sparkly eyeliner. i think the girls i know look disgusting with their HEAVY black liquid eyeliner and their bright pink blush (which i don’t need since i laugh a lot and get just the right amount of color to my face!) i use cover up and smartshade makeup (which is best recommended for younger people for their exact shade.) i spent a LONG time trying to get a makeup that make my face look even in the color (redness around nose, forehead, etc.) to shorten this, just make sure she uses it LIGHT AND RESPONSIVELY.

Well i Dont Tink dat its a BIG ISSUE cuz as i was allowd to wear make up buh wasnt interestd in wearing it and i was always interestd in waering make up buh i nevr botherd untill now that im 16. its fun and ways for her to xperiment and learn awl the mistakes to do with make up now. rather than later on. and as long as its light make up. such as a tinted moisturiser i think its fine. i think that sum ppl or rents make a BIG ISSUE out of nothing. i mean its not lyk shes sneaking out the house to go to parties and be with boys or ne thing of that nature. so i dnt get y yol are making a mountain out of a mole hill. buh hey this is juz my opionion.
