Feminists Hate the Idea of Family

Posted by DJ Nelson on June 3rd, 2009

The number 9 stereotype on the Top 10 Feminist Stereotypes is that feminists hate the idea of family. Most of the time when I hear this it’s from the religious extreme who view women as children who should be seen and not heard.

That being said, there are some good reasons that people use this as an argument against anything that has to do with the word feminism.

See:Why Did Feminists Attack Family? (off site)

In my opinion we are dealing with extremes on both sides.

There is one side that says that believes that a woman’s place is at home, she should have no other interests outside of her husband and children, her husband is king, and anything outside of that is practically blasphemous. (See: Wives, Submit to Your Husbands)

Then there’s the other side that thinks that women who stay at home are making it difficult for women to be taken seriously. They believe that since they have chosen a career, or something else outside of the home to focus on they are superior because anyone can pop out babies. Some may have children and want to prove that they can juggle everything; while others may hate children and feel they have too much to do to be tied down.

The funny thing is that both extremes want to have the choices to live as they see fit but they don’t want to extend that courtesy to anyone else.

So what we have is two extreme views of what family should be, but they happen to be on the opposite sides of the spectrum.

Sometimes when you are faced with extremes, it’s hard to see that there are viewpoints scattered all across the middle ground.

So the Feminist Hate Family idea is not truth, it’s a case of extremes.
