I’ll Pass on the Hooters

Posted by DJ Nelson on August 19th, 2009

I saw a Hooters commercial today for the first time. Needless to say I didn’t like it.

Aside from being glad that I don’t have children to protect from such images, I started to wonder how well it would go over if my idea for a chain of restaurants called Balls was advertised on TV. In my mind, it would look just as ridiculous as the commercial I saw; maybe even more so since we aren’t used to seeing men prance around like objects.

But I’ve discussed this before so now is as good as time as ever to repost my opinions on that particular restaurant chain.

Enter Hooters- a restaurant, and a term that is often used to describe a woman’s body part.

Women walk around in tight shirts, short shorts, and serve you chicken…so I’ve heard because I’ve never been there.

Still, I don’t see how anyone could find this quasi-strip club like atmosphere anything less than offensive. Furthermore, to allow children in such a place is just wrong.

What are you teaching your son when you take him to eat at Hooters? Women are objects who you should oogle at as they serve you food?

What are you teaching your daughters when you take them to eat at Hooters? That they should aspire to look good in underwear-like pants and cleavage-revealing tops so they can prance around men and get tips and compliments?

I know that some will argue that if a woman has a problem with it then she is insecure, uptight, and frigid.
That argument is tired, old, and played out. Why should women have to accept being objectified? Why should they have to put up with feeling uncomfortable just to fit in?

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. Women are the only group in the world that gets points for partaking in their own marginalization.

Girls Can’t What? Wrote a post back in March about Hooters and the comments vary from “the food is good” to “if you don’t like it, don’t eat there”, to “yup, it’s degrading.”

I left a lengthy comment myself, but it can be summed up by the last sentence: When they make a place called Balls and the men go topless wearing Speedos it will still be ridiculous, but at least I won’t be able to say “only women would put up with that trash”.

Gender equality is the only issue which might be holding the master-key of all the
problems. Discrimination starts right from nascent age( more precisely from the womb..). Parent will give lesser attention for the nutrition and education of female child. This discrimination haunts them, in one way or another, whole life.
Religion becomes a potent tool in the hands of few manipulative people. They may be found everywhere..in every religion, in every community.
Women sould leave the yoke of superstitions and come out to celebrate a new dawn of faminity…

I actually have worked at Hooters for 2 years and don’t agree at all that women are degrading them selves by any means working there. Hooters is a family place and every type of person young kids, teenagers, middle aged kids, and elderly couples. If you have never been to a Hooters how can you even have an opinion, much less take the time to write about it. The outfit covers no less than shorts and a regular tank top would and the girls aren’t uncomfortable. If they were they wouldn’t have worked there in the first place. Also, in no way are you a bad parent because of bringing your kids to hooters. Families come in daily and their daughters aren’t going to look up to being an object because of Hooters. If anything she will be influenced by her friends and the people at her school or what she sees on TV. Hooters does a lot of great things for women and have raised over 1 million dollars for the Kelly Joe Dought fund. She was a Hooters girl that developed breast cancer and past away. My store alone raised over $2,000. The Hooters pagent every year gives out $50,000 for the winner plus a bunch of great opportunities to travel around the world. The contest is similar to Miss America. Would it be so bad for your daughter to look up to that? I am currently going to school full time and living on my own and working full time. Hooters is good money and most the girls that I work with are doing the same thing.
