Admitting My Biases

Posted by DJ Nelson on November 18th, 2009

I talk a great deal about not labeling every woman who expresses that women should be treated like human beings as some vile, evil, man-hating, hussy.

It just never makes sense to me that you can’t say anything logical without someone saying “oh you are a feminist” are rolling their eyes.

Women are not sex objects- “Ugh, you are a feminist”

That rape t-shirt is not funny “Quit being such a feminist”

That double standard make no sense “Oh you are one of those fembots”

But I just realized that I do something very similar, and it’s strange to admit it.

There is a group….let’s call them an “activism group” that makes my blood boil. When I hear the name that they call themselves I automatically get annoyed. If someone outright says, “hey, I am one of them”, I automatically think horrible things.

It never occurred to me that I do this until someone said, “hey, I am one of them, but that doesn’t mean I am a bad person. All of us don’t think that way. “

Ding, ding, ding…wow, I felt so embarrassed. I have such a narrow view of this group of people based upon how some people choose to behave. Therefore in my mind, this group is synonymous with not a very nice term. And yet, even knowing that I can’t possibly group every individual in that bad category, the word itself still leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

So there, I’m admitting it. And now I resolve to take a bit of my own advice.

I wanted to post to this. There are people on both sides of the isle who use strawmen and ad hoc fallacies to attack the other position.

I’m anti feminist. Unlike many feminist or anti feminist, who masturbates to their own rhetoric convincing themselves that they are right which leads to further stagnation in TRUTH, growth, discourse, and debate. I confront those who seek different views and discuss it.

For example I sought a woman studies teacher inquiring about the feminist group at college and got into a discussion. We were respectful despite, which is hard for me at times, much of the victimization argumentation I hear from feminist.

I wrote a clever response but found it deleted. I posted a comment that tied the poster of the message and the site’s author and how they were much related; in that, they both got amusement in each other. I guess she didn’t like that.
