My Little Girl

I haven’t read a children’s book in ages, but when I heard about Tim McGraw’s My Little Girl I wanted to read it. Due to a great PR campaign (kudos), I heard that there was a good message behind the book and that it was meant to encourage young girls.

The premise of the story is that Katie, a young girl, is going to spend a special day with her dad. She is very excited until she learns that they won’t be doing anything in particular. But of course, sometimes doing nothing is the best thing you can do.

While the writing wasn’t that impressive, I enjoyed the message behind it. Also, I found the illustrations to be very age appropriate, so don’t worry, Katie is not walking around wearing a halter top and high boots.

Some of the scenes reminded me of when I was young and had special days with my dad. In one scene, Katie asks her dad to tell her about when he was a boy. This put a smile on my face because I loved it when my dad told me about his childhood. It took me back to the days when my father would tuck me in at night and tell me stories.

Dad’s you have a big part in shaping what kind of woman your daughter grows up to be so don’t underestimate that. Positive attention from Dad is something young girls need.

1500 Women; 365 Days

My 2009 goal is to inspire as many women as possible.

Life is tough, and sometimes we all need a little pick me up; so what can I do about it?

I plan to spend the next year connecting with women by helping to uplift and empower them on a personal level.

There’s no cost, I’m doing this for free because I want to make a difference. I want to be a person who brings joy into peoples lives because I feel that is what I’m being called to do.

Will you help me with my goal?

Twice a week I’ll send out inspirational thoughts, motivations, and tips that will help you live your best life. All I ask is that when you find something useful, you pass it on to a friend.

Is Beyonce a good role model for young girls?

The day I saw her video for Single Ladies, I wrote a status on Facebook wondering how long it would take for little girls to start uploading videos of themselves doing the choreography.

It didn’t take long.

By the way, how old does that last girl look, 9?

Hey, everyone has hobbies I guess, but I’m starting to wonder is Beyonce a woman that our young girls need to watch and emulate?

If I had a daughter would I have a problem with her being a Beyonce fan?

No, I Will Not Eat at Hooters

I don’t have a problem with women making their own choices, but I do have a problem when those choices are made out of ignorance, peer pressure, or silly man made traditions.

Enter Hooters- a restaurant, and a term that is often used to describe a woman’s body part.

Women walk around in tight shirts, short shorts, and serve you chicken…so I’ve heard because I’ve never been there.

Still, I don’t see how anyone could find this quasi-strip club like atmosphere anything less than offensive. Furthermore, to allow children in such a place is just wrong.

Wives, Submit to Your Husbands

Submission.

I hate that word, and every time it’s used I roll my eyes and cringe. I’m working on dropping the eye roll, but it’s difficult for me.

You see quite frequently I’m asked, “so, you’re a Christian right, how do you deal with that submission thing?”

“Well, what do you mean?” I respond while preparing for what’s coming next.

“The Bible! It says you have to submit to your husband so do you do that?”

“What do you mean by submit?” I say, and that is where things get tricky.

Poll: Breastfeeding in Public Is….

You always hear that “breast is best”, but when it comes down to it people have strong opinions on breastfeeding in general.

Here are the opinions that I’ve come across so far:

You have the women who decide that breastfeeding is best for them, yet they still respect moms who might make a different choice.

You have the women who see breastfeeding as a mothers duty and they look down on moms who choose to formula feed.

There’s the women who are completely and utterly uncomfortable with the idea of breastfeeding.

Then there’s those who don’t give a darn either way.

Just Shut Up…Please

I recently had an interesting conversation with a group of ladies.

Actually it was more of an intellectual rant, as I was growing weary of the conversation that was going on.

You know, the usual woman hating conversation that seems to be common place.

“She’s so fat, she needs to lose weight”.

“Why doesn’t she do something with her hair?”

“Blah, Blah, Blah, Blah”

Would you kindly shut up…please.

Why do women do this to each other? Why do we sit around judging each other so harshly, yet at the same time we get mad at men for doing the same thing?

If it’s not work choices, then it’s how many kids someone has. If it’s not about kids then it’s about weight. If it’s not about weight then it’s about silly beauty routines that are seen as normal.

Everything about women is up for debate, criticism, and judgment.

Where’s the freedom? Where’s the choices? Are choices only valid if they are the same choices that you would make?

In the end, we all need to realize that by espousing hatred for some women’s choices, we become the misogynists we are trying to overcome.

I wish I could take credit for that quote, but I read it online.

So the next time a catty fest starts, don’t join in on the meows, do us all a favor and be the one to say “just shut up…please!”
